NGO, better known as Non-Governmental Organization are non-profit organizations which are formed for the purpose of addressing social or political issue. Such organizations are more engaged in humanitarian, educational, social, human rights, public policy, healthcare etc. The sole purpose of NGO is to address a social or political issue.

Do NGO require Registration?

Although there is no compulsion or specific requirement to register an NGO, but if the social workers or social activists or volunteers want to form an organization, then they need to register it as a registered organization. To run various social development programmes, projects and activities, then the organization must have the legal registered status and also if we want to run, manage, operate the programmes at vast and broader level, then a group or team would be required. If an NGO wants to open an office and employ people, then it must be registered under the Shop and Establishment Act. To employ foreign staff, a non-profit organization needs to be registered as a trust/society/company, have registration and must also obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC). There are many reasons and circumstances for which the registration is required even if we are confident enough to run and organize the programmes and social activities without the registration. In India the registration process for NGO is available under various Acts and laws in different states; mainly under Trust, Society and Nonprofit Private Limited Company Registration. A Charitable Trust can be registered under Indian Trusts Act.

Documents Required for NGO Registration

The documents which are required to register an NGO are Copy of Registration Certificate and two self-attested copies of MOA/Trust deed by the NGO head or any authorized person, NOC from Landlord, Copy of PAN Card of NGO, and copy of Electricity bill or house tax receipt.
